Behind the Design x Pauline Spin

a conversation with
PAULINE SPIN
For this edition of Behind the Design, we speak with Pauline Spin, Managing Director of Royal Goedewaagen, one of the oldest ceramic factories in Europe. With over four centuries of heritage, the brand continues to evolve through craftsmanship, innovation and contemporary collaborations.
In conversation with Pauline, we explore the balance between tradition and modernity, the role of the table today, and the story behind the collaboration with Blank Space.
Read below our conversation with Pauline.

1. Royal Goedewaagen carries over 400 years of history. How does that legacy shape the way you work today?
Legacy, to me, is not something static, it’s something you actively carry forward. At Royal Goedewaagen, that history creates a strong sense of responsibility, but also a clear foundation to build on. It allows us to make decisions with depth, rather than just reacting to trends. What I find most inspiring is that craftsmanship has remained at the core for centuries. My role is to translate that into today’s context, making sure the brand continues to evolve while staying true to its character. That balance between respect and progression is what guides almost everything we do.
2. This collaboration brings ceramics and textiles together. What drew you to that combination?
What I loved about this collaboration is the contrast and how naturally it comes together. Ceramics are solid, structured and long-lasting, while textiles bring softness, movement and a certain ease. When you combine the two, you create a more complete atmosphere. It’s no longer just about objects, but about a setting, something that feels layered and considered without becoming rigid. That interplay between tactile elements is what makes a table feel alive.Without the contrast, it risks becoming too predictable. And predictability is something I try to avoid.
3. In three words, how would you describe the Royal Goedewaagen x Blank Space collection?
Refined, layered and contemporary.
4. What role does the table play in your life?
For me, the table is where everything slows down. In a world that moves quickly, it’s one of the few places where people genuinely take time for each other. I don’t see it as something that has to be perfect but quite the opposite. The most memorable moments happen when things feel effortless. A table should invite people to stay a little longer, to talk, to share. Often, the most memorable conversations happen around a table that wasn’t planned at all, which says a lot about what really matters. That sense of connection is what makes it meaningful and authentic.
5. If you could invite anyone to your table, who would it be and why?
I’m always more interested in bringing together people from completely different worlds than choosing one specific person. The most interesting conversations happen when perspectives collide, when there’s curiosity, contrast, and a bit of friction. If I had to choose, it would be a mix of creatives, entrepreneurs and thinkers. People who challenge each other, but also inspire. That dynamic is far more valuable to me. That’s what creates energy.
